Just your career

Words & music: 2000 Henrik Wigestrand

When attending an intensive 16 week training in Sweden for system engineers (SE's) and sales representatives,
I wrote this song for co-student who was also there for a thorough overview, but now a brainwash.

(More information in Norwegian about my IBM "career". Picture of myself with some IBM colleagues.)

You've been feeling somewhat lost,
This is not the way you felt before:
You've been feeling like you're running
your head into open doors.
You've been learning things
for which you have no explicit need,
And the books they gave you
made you think you could no longer read,
But if you lend an ear,
I'll try to make it clear:

It's only natural, have no fear -
Just try to fake a Systems Engineer,
It's not you - it's just your career.

Now the tiger is not a bird,
It don't need to know how to fly.
And this fact isn't as absurd
as you think, and I'll tell you why:
I believe that if somebody tried to teach it how
to fly, it would feel like you do now,
So have another beer,
I'll try to make it clear:

It's only natural, have no fear -
Just try to fake a systems engineer,
It's not you - it's just your career.

So let tigers be tigers, and birds be birds,
and let those apes just dance.
'Cause you can show them what you're worth
if they give you half a chance:
I know the setup here is complex,
but the simple truth remains:
If we were born to be SE's ,
we would have disks instead of brains!
